Exploring Idaho’s Wildlife: Nature at Its Wildest

If you’ve had the pleasure of exploring Idaho, you know it’s not just the breathtaking landscapes that leave you in awe. From the peaks of the Sawtooth Mountains to the serene rivers winding through the valleys, Idaho is home to an incredible variety of wildlife. Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast, a casual hiker, or simply love observing nature, Idaho’s wilderness offers something for everyone.

Idaho’s wildlife includes some amazing creatures that make this state so wonderfully wild. Our state is known for its incredible wildlife. All of them play a vital role in nature and require healthy natural systems to survive. Ensuring healthy habitat for wildlife is one of the many reasons why conserving land, protecting water and taking climate action are so important to the well-being of animals, plants, and people. The Idaho landscape, from the northern forest and streams to the southern arid canyons, is expansive and diverse, providing habitat for a variety of native species including 99 mammals, 230 birds, 22 reptiles, 13 amphibians and 39 fish.

Idaho’s Majestic Mammals

When you think of Idaho’s wildlife, some of the state’s larger inhabitants likely come to mind. Idaho’s mountainous terrain and lush forests provide the perfect habitat for many mammals, including:

Elk: One of Idaho’s most iconic species, elk roam the forests and meadows, often spotted in large herds. If you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of one in the early morning or at dusk. Their bugling calls are a sound you won’t forget!

Moose: These gentle giants are a bit more elusive but equally impressive. Moose can often be found near lakes and rivers, grazing on aquatic vegetation. Though they may seem peaceful, it’s best to admire them from a distance.

Mountain Lions: While it’s rare to see a mountain lion in the wild, knowing they’re out there adds a sense of mystery to Idaho’s wilderness. These stealthy predators prefer to stay hidden, but they’re an essential part of the state’s ecosystem, helping control deer populations.

Black Bears: Idaho’s forests are home to a thriving population of black bears. These curious creatures can often be spotted foraging for berries or fishing in rivers. While camping in bear country, make sure to store your food properly!

Idaho’s diverse landscapes attract a wide variety of bird species, making it a haven for bird lovers. Here are a few of the feathered friends you might spot:

A Bull Trout

Bull Trout: While they’re a bit more elusive, bull trout are another species you might encounter while fishing in Idaho’s clear mountain streams. These fish thrive in cold, clean water and are a sign of a healthy ecosystem.

Protecting Idaho’s Wildlife

As much as we love experiencing Idaho’s wildlife, it’s important to remember that these animals need our help to thrive. Idaho is committed to wildlife conservation, with many programs in place to protect endangered species and preserve natural habitats. Whether it’s reducing human impact on sensitive areas, maintaining sustainable hunting and fishing practices, or creating safe migration corridors, there’s a lot being done to ensure Idaho’s wildlife has a bright future.

Idaho License Plates Focus on Wildlife

Idaho’s wildlife license plates raise money for non-game wildlife conservation. The Idaho Fish and Wildlife Foundation recently introduced three colorful new wildlife-themed license plate designs to support local wildlife featuring the elk, cutthroat trout, and mountain bluebird. Each plate features original artwork by Idaho artists.

These iconic Idaho species are featured on the state’s wildlife specialty license plates that can be seen on the front and rear bumpers of thousands of vehicles in Idaho. This license plate program raises money for wildlife conservation. According to the department, proceeds from each license plate purchase will support distinct causes within Fish and Game’s wildlife diversity program.
